The Boss with Friction
The Boss with Friction is five friends from Scarborough, Ontario. They met in high school and never stopped playing. For twenty years they played other people's songs at weddings and real estate mixers. Now they play their own. Heavy analog soul and funk. Rehearsal is Tuesday. Someone brings snacks.
The Long Version
It started in a basement in Scarborough. Five friends, one drum kit, a bass amp that still hums. That was high school.
Then jobs happened. Mortgages happened. The band kept playing on weekends, because it was the one meeting nobody wanted to skip. For about twenty years they took whatever gig came in. Weddings, retirement parties, the occasional real estate mixer. The Boss watched a lot of realtors eat appetizers while the band played Stevie Wonder. They did not look up. The band played it anyway.
At some point they ran out of other people's songs. Or patience. Hard to say. They started writing their own, and the songs came out heavy and slow and a little tired, which is how songs come out after decades of open-concept offices and the 401. Isaac Hayes is in there. Early Santana. Parliament. The soundtracks nobody let them play at the weddings.
The songs are about work. Mostly the kind where someone says "circle back" and means it. The album is called 20 Year Lease. It follows a man who signs one.
